DNCE talk crazy dreams and their musical direction with Client Magazine

Ahead of the release of their self-titled debut album next week, DNCE are Client Magazine’s latest cover stars. As well as some stunning new pictures, the band also spoke to Client, opening up about over-production in the music industry, their writing process and even Cole’s crazy dreams!

Speaking on how much control the band have on their musical direction, lead singer Joe Jonas confirmed that the band have “1000% control”. He elaborated: “We control pretty much everything we come up with and we really get to collaborate and try to come up with fun ideas.”

Not only do they have total control on their musical direction, but they love to let loose during live shows too. Joe said: “When we’re performing live, it’s really fun for us to really let loose and come up with a full show that makes DNCE the best version of ourselves whether it’s wild and crazy or it’s a song that reminds us of our childhood, we try to showcase that on stage.”

During the interview, Joe also gave readers an insight into the band’s writing process, which seems to be just as random as the band itself. “The writing process is different every time. There’s moments where I’ve written songs by myself for this upcoming album, there’s been times where we’ve all been in the same room and collaborated and it’s been just one guitar chord or a bass line and it kind of grows and grows until we have something that feels like it’s unique, and then we get into the studio and try to put it together.”

Whilst Joe has had a celebrity status for a number of years, over the past twelve months, the band have collectively garnered a name for themselves in the celebrity world, whilst also proving to be great artists. Cole Whittle shared his insight on the difference between a celebrity and an artist. “I think the difference between an ‘artist’ and a ‘celebrity’ is that some people are both, some people are neither, but I think it’s an amazing ying and yang win when people find themselves being both. Being an artist that’s being recognised at a level in pop culture in the universe for their art. So I think the difference can be like an empty trash can or a beautiful garden.”

The band also shared their thoughts on over-production in the music industry, and how DNCE manage to strike a balance. Cole said, “I think, like always, there are people who do too much to something that was pure and perfect the first time and I also think there are people that do the right amount, and I think there’s people that don’t do enough so I think it’s just a balance of imperfection being perfection in any art form and I think we’re really happy with our balance of organic versus polished funk spaceship vibes.”

As well as discussing the music industry and their musical direction, the band also found the time to enlighten us on some of their ‘crazy’ dreams. Cole said, “My dreams are very strange. They’re often ultra sexual and there’s a lot of aliens in my dreams, there’s strange planets that I feel like I’ve been to and there’s a lot of Penelope Cruz.”

Very strange indeed.
