Five Interesting Facts About Cheryl Hines

Multi-talented and extremely funny, Cheryl Hines has been entertaining audiences for more than two decades.  Born in Miami Beach, FL, Hines worked a slew of jobs before deciding to go into acting.  She began her acting career in Los Angeles, CA at The Groundlings Theater, and made her first on-screen appearance during a 1993 episode of, Swamp Thing: The Series.  Since her debut, Hines has become one of the funniest and most-talked about women in Hollywood.   From 2000 to 2011, she starred as Cheryl David on he HBO improvisational comedy series, Curb Your Enthusiasm.  During the show, Hines portrayed Larry David’s on-screen wife, and her character was often annoyed by Larry’s behavior.  The show was a critical success and has become one of the most acclaimed series of the 2000s.  Throughout its 11 year run, the show earned numerous awards including seven Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series.  Since the show’s end, Hines has starred in the ABC series, Suburgatory, where she plays Dallas Royce.  Her role in the show earned her a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, and Hines’ career is showing no signs of slowing down.  Although she has been able to stay busy with her work, there is much more to Hines than what she displays on the screen.  Here are five interesting facts about Cheryl Hines.

5. Cheryl Hines is married to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

After three years of dating, Cheryl Hines married Robert F. Kennedy Jr, son of slain senator Robert ‘Bobby’ F. Kennedy Sr, at the Kennedy family’s famous compound in Hyannisport, MA.  In attendance were members of the famous Kennedy clan as well as other well-known celebrities, including Larry David and Julia-Louis Dreyfus.  The couple originally planed to elope with their children; however, they decided that they wanted both of their mothers to be in attended for the couple’s special day.  Hines, who was excited to see the two families become one, stated: “It’s fun that the two families are coming together. It’s very sweet that way. I come from a big family and the Kennedys are a big family. It feels natural. It feels fun.”

4. Cheryl Hines is an avid poker player.

Aside from acting, Cheryl Hines also enjoys playing poker and has earned $50,000 throughout her playing career.  At the poker table, Hines has become famous for her trash-talking, and she states: “I do have a tendency to talk a lot at the poker table, which throws people off because they spend a lot of time trying to read me. But I talk a lot when I have a good hand and when I have a bad hand, too. Sometimes it annoys people so much they can’t wait to get out of the tournament. And that can only be good for me.”  However, although she enjoys trading a few insults, Hines says that her favorite part of poker is being able to manipulate her opponents.  She says what she enjoys most is knowing that she “can just look into someone’s eyes and lie – and it’s perfectly acceptable.”

3. Cheryl Hines is involved with United Cerebral Palsy.

When Cheryl Hines nephew, Michael, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, she quickly turned to United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) to educate herself on the disease.  Over the years, Hines has become more involved with the organization and holds its cause dear to her heart.  She currently serves on the board of trustees for UCP and stated: “It puts things in perspective for me. I’m in a business where we think about ourselves a lot: celebrity, show business people, is my latte hot enough? Then you meet these families who have extra challenges and are very gratefully fighting the fight out there, figuring out how to keep their families together. That’s what life is about. It’s not about the lattes, not that I ever thought it was. But you do get caught up in your own little world

2. Cheryl Hines encourages up-and-coming actors to change their definition of success.

During an interview, when asked if she had any advice for up-and-coming actors, Cheryl Hines has some interesting words of encouragement.  She stated: “Let go of the idea that it is only a success if you get the part because then you will always be waiting for success. Celebrate success in just getting an audition or in reading a good play or a good script or even just in doing a good improv with your friend in your living room. You have to celebrate the little successes!”

1. Cheryl Hines had 17 cats during her childhood.

During her childhood, Cheryl Hines had 17 pet cats once time.  During an interview she shared: “They all lived outside, and they kept having more kittens. My mom made us put little ribbons around each kitten’s neck, put them in a wagon, and go door-to-door around the neighborhood to try to give them away.” Fortunately for Hines, she seems to be on-track to avoid becoming a “crazy cat lady” later on in life.
